Item Description
A charming little curio for your antique button collection. An original 1794 John Howard Penny Token made in to a button. This token was in issue in Portsmouth and Chichester in the year 1794.
We see the front face with a side profile of John Howard, script around the edge stating John Howard F.R.S Philanthropist. To the revere obscured by the button securer would have been and just visible the arms with sun & moon above, date 1794 below. Around this the wording Portsmouth And Chichester Half Penny. Around the thin edge of the token the words Payable At Sharps Portsmouth and Chaldecotts Chichester.
John Howard FRS was born on 2 September 1726 and died on 20 January 1790. He was a philanthropist and early English prison reformer.
Size: 28 mm diameter, approx 1 1/8 inch.
Condition: Fair condition considering its vast age and the fact that a very long time ago it was made in to a button. It was at that period that it was painted black. The black covering has worn in places. Also a slight unevenness at 5 o'clock. The wording around the edge quite indecipherable.
