Item Description

This is a very scarce lead glazed pottery figure of a monkey that dates to circa 1780. The pottery figure is modelled as a seated monkey on a mound base/hillock and is decorated in the most fabulous glaze! The figure is very finely modelled, it is a quality example from the later 18th century.

Monkey depictions date back to antiquity, the ancient Egyptians depicted them on the interiors of their tombs. They were again very popular throughout the 1600 and 1700s in various art forms. In fact 'Singerie' was a visual arts genre that depicted monkeys mimicking human behavior, often dressed in human clothing. See the works of Watteau, or Berain The Elder. Also because of the expansion in trade through the likes of The East India company and its counterparts, new species of small, agile, intelligent monkeys were being brought back and introduced to western society to be kept as exotic pets or added to a menagerie. Monkeys began to be modelled in pottery and porcelain; see the monkey bands by Meissen, or the pottery Monkey whistle produced by Ralph Wood in the 1780s.

This is the perfect item for anyone who loves Georgian era century ceramics or English country house antiques.
