RARE 19th Century Ambrotype Photograph of A Regency Portrait Miniature Gentleman Officer
Item Description
We are excited to be able to share with you this wonderful, unusual, ambrotype photograph.
This all original ninth plate photograph is so unusual; it is in fact a photograph of an early 19th century English school miniature painting of a British Army officer. The portrait features a gentleman facing us, notice wonderful costume details such as the epaulettes, sash and gold frame .
Photographs like this are quite uncommon; they were likely produced so that members of the family could each have a copy of the original portrait. A wonderful keepsake.
The photograph is housed in its original velvet lined case.
This is a fabulous photograph. We can’t help wonder who the sitter was.
Measuring: Case width 2 3/8 inch (6 cm) by height 2 7/8 inch (7.5 cm). Ninth plate ambrotype measure approximately 2 inch (5 cm) by 2.5 inch (6.5 cm). Approximate central oval portrait size 1 inch (3 cm) by 1.5 inch (3.5 cm).
Condition: The case has light surface wear; the spine in the case has partially separated but still opens and closes fine. The top of the locking mechanism is a little loose and fiddly but will work fine when established in right position. Some loss to ambrotype backing surface as is common, meaning that the photograph has some ghosting. Some spots (seen in image) part of the early photographic process.
