Item Description

We adore early Derby porcelain figures and this charming little squirrel has to be an absolute favourite. This extremely rare and sought after white and gilt porcelain figure was produced in England circa 1810. The figure is finely modelled as a Red Squirrel eating a nut and was produced by the prestigious Derby porcelain factory. This is one of the most sought after English porcelain animal figures. It is an exceptional piece that is extremely hard to find. This is a fabulous collector’s piece.

The Squirrel features ornate gilt decoration with an unglazed base with incised manufacturer numbering mark reading ‘3’ which corresponds with the examples shown in the reference book bellow.

The figure was produced in several sizes in both coloured and uncoloured form, likely 3 sizes. Our example is smaller than the larger figures at just 7.5 cm tall (larger is 8.3 cm tall).

Measuring: Width 1 7/8 inch (4.8 cm) by height 2 7/8 inch (7.3 cm). Depth 1 3/8 inch (3.2 cm).

Condition: Natural crazing to glaze, there is a shallow ‘y’ shape hairline to right side of body, a minor hairline to right arm, and a hairline to left arm. All are very old and perfectly stable. Factory firing fault between figure’s feet.
