Item Description

This rare, very small Mauchline Ware snuff box was produced in Scotland during the 19th century, circa 1850. The snuff box features transfer printed design to the hinged lid depicting a child riding their pet Newfoundland dog, notice the child is holding a little sword. What a charming scene! This style of scene was popular during the 1840 – 1860s and is perhaps most often associated with transfer printed pottery. This scene can occasionally be found on transfer printed ceramics, the pattern is titled ‘The little Jockey’.

Of course popularised during the 1820's by the paintings of Sir Edwin Landseer; Newfoundland dogs were also a favorite breed of four US presidents. James Buchanan brought Lara into the Whitehouse in the 1857 period. See the artistic impression of her in the popular 1857 magazine called ' Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper'. Ulysses S. Grant had a Newfoundland called Faithful, Rutherford B. Hayes had a newfie called Hector and James A. Garfield had a Newfie called Veto.

Mauchline Ware has always been extremely collectible, particularly pieces featuring animals. Mauchline Ware is the name given to the 19th century wooden printed tourist wares manufactured in the town of Mauchline, East Ayrshire, Scotland. This little snuff box was likely made in the town of Cumnock which is just a few miles away from Mauchline.

A super little treasure, it will be a firm favorite.

Measuring: Width 2 ¾ inch (7 cm) by depth 1 1/8 inch (2.5 cm). Depth ½ inch (1.5 cm).

Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age. Some areas of loss to tinned lining.
