19th Century Reverse Painted Print On Glass The Lords Supper Luke 22:19 1812
Item Description
This amazing original early 19th century reverse painted mezzotint engraving on glass was produced in England in the year 1812. The print features a religious scene titled ‘The Lords Supper’ with text below reading ‘And he took bread & gave thanks & break it & gave unto them saying, this is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Luke 22. Chapter. 19’
The Last Supper is the final meal that, in the Gospel accounts, Jesus shared with his 12 apostles in Jerusalem before his crucifixion.
The engraving features the publishers’ details reading ‘Painted by W. B. Walker ???? (4, Fox & Knot Court) Cow Lane, London, May 11th, 1812.’ W. B. Walker was a publisher of popular mezzotints; his name is also mentioned as a painter on a hand-coloured mezzotints. Little is known about Mr Walker.
Through our own research we believe he was William Bond Walker who married
Sarah Ann Dibden in 1821 at Saint Matthew, Bethnal Green, London. William Bond Walker was a widow at the time of his marriage to Sarah. We know that Walker was active as a publisher/printer during the first quarter of the 19th century. Several of his engravings are housed in the British Museum.
The engraving is housed in its original stained wood frame and is complete with its original backing board. This is a rare and hard to find reverse painted print on glass and is perfect for anyone who loves religious art.
