Rare Antique Georgian Sewing Box Hand Painted Shells Flowers and Country Scene Dated 1809
Item Description
We are thrilled to offer this amazing 200 years plus survivor from George III era England. Like several other of our recent rarer sewing items, this delectable card sewing box comes from a prominent private English collector.
This small rectangular box would have been purchased by a Georgian lady during the 1800 to 1809 period from a Fancy Goods Repository (Stationery shop) in its plain paste board form. It would have been taken home to be lovingly decorated, making this a unique one of a kind box.
The owner loved the great outdoors and all of nature's bounty. She has themed her box to celebrate the natural world around her. For the lid she chose to paint an oval country scene in monochrome /grisaille shades of water colour, edged in plain gold edging strip. For the two longer faces she chose wild flowers from the English hedgerow for her theme. For the shorter ends we go to the coast, we see two totally different, very beautiful shell portraits. Each side again edged in plain gold strip. Lift the lid to reveal the original yellow paper lining. Two silk twist skeins with labels to be found inside. We love the base of the box as it has its original laid paper base with paper makers watermark and partial date 180?
Size: 7 3/4 inch wide (19.5 cm) by 2 1/4 inch deep (5.5 cm) by 1 3/4 inches tall (4.5 cm).
Condition: Good but please bear in mind the great age, after approx 214 years a delicate card box will not be pristine. All of the following are minor but mentioned for accuracy. There is a 1/2 piece of gold strip edging missing to the top oval scene. General age wear/patina to the surface of the card lid. Two right corners of the lid are split with age/usage - an easy fix with a dab of glue but we do not repair our antiques.
