Rare Childrens Early Zoo Zebra Plate Nursery Ware Pearlware C 1840 Zoological

This rare and decorative little octagonal nursery ware plate is the ideal piece for anyone who collects children’s pottery! This is a rare plate with a desirable subject matter; very few complete examples of this plate now exist.

The plate was produced in the England during the 19th century, circa 1840. The plate features a wonderful hand coloured transfer printed design titled ‘Visit to the Zebra.’ The scene features a little boy visiting a Zebra at the zoo. The Zebra is likely a Quagga! The Quagga is a subspecies of the Zebra that was hunted to extinction during the late 19th century.
Visiting the Zoo must have been an incredible experience for 19th century Britain’s. The plate was likely made to cash in on the interest in wild animals thanks to the popularity of the London Zoological Gardens, the world's oldest scientific zoo which opened in 1828.

The plate also features a decorative raised floral boarder with a pink lustre rim. What a fabulous little plate this is.

This charming piece will display excellently in any collection.
