Item Description

We are excited to be able to share this incredibly rare English pearlware mug! We have not seen another like it! The mug was produced in England during the early 19th century, circa 1800. The pearlware mug features a blue and white transfer printed design with text reading:

‘Should the Corsican Tyrant, Set foot on our shore, Wee’l play him such a hornpipe, He neer danc’d before.’

The ‘Corsican Tyrant’ refers to Napoleon Bonaparte (B 15 August 1769 – d 5 May 1821). Napoleon was born on the island of Corsica and he is considered one of the greatest military commanders in history! During the Napoleonic Wars, the British press depicted Napoleon as a dangerous tyrant, poised to invade.

This is possible an unrecorded piece; we cannot find another example. We cannot find another example of the printed text in any form! This is the perfect item for anyone with a passion for history and early ceramics.

Please see our collection of 18th and 19th century art and antiques listed separately in our store.

Measuring: Width including handle 3 3/8 inch (8.5 cm) by height 2 ¾ inch (6.7 cm).

Condition: A few minor shallow old chips to rim but otherwise very good!
