Vintage Ethnic Womens Shoes Wooden Sandals Velvet Embroidery

These were most likely made as Wedding or Ceremonial footwear as their profuse decoration is not for daily wear. The toe post/ thong sandal design is very unusual and will tie this pair of late 19th century/ early 20th century shoes down to a certain area in the world.

They are of simple construction but very decorative. The padded toe post is secured to the underside front via a slot and a peg, to the rear by a slot in the wood, a leather tie and two more iron nails.These shoes are made from wood which was then covered in cotton velvet and profusely decorated in gold metal purl, pink woollen thread, amber glass bugle beads and finally delicate pearl type beads. To the underside of the wooden sole you can still see the tool impressions where the maker has carved the wood. The horseshoe shaped leather heel protectors are fabulous with their five iron nails.

Measuring: A small length 22 cm, Width 7.5 cm, Height 5.5 cm

Condition - These shoes have been worn. The lovely, rich green cotton velvet has worn back to its woven base in many areas. Some metal purl thread has worn away on the inner heal area. But considering their age we feel that they are in good, display worthy condition with vibrant colouring and 90 percent of metal thread work in place.
