18th Century Charles Taylor Stipple Engraving Portrait Miniature Mother & Child C 1790

This is a very delightful little stipple engraving that was produced in England in September 1790. The print features an allegorical scene with a mother and child and was engraved by Charles Taylor (b 1756 – d 1828), of Holborn, London. Taylor went into business in London as an engraver. In 1780 his house was burnt down during the Gordon riots, and he moved to Holborn.

The print is housed behind old glass in a early 19th century papier mache frame. This is the perfect item for anyone who loves 18th century art and antiques. The backing board is complete with one of the previous owners inscriptions reading:

‘Francis Westby Brady married Cornelius O'Callaghan of Ballinahinch. 2nd Lord William Somerset.’

The O'Callaghans move to Ballinahinch, Ireland in the 1808. Cornelius O'Callaghan built Ballinahinch House. Cornelius married Frances Westby Brady in the year 1815. Cornelius died in the 1829 leaving there daughters and two sons.

Francis remarried in 1844. She married Rev. Lord William George Henry Somerset (b 1784 – d 1851) who was an Anglican cleric and aristocrat who was rector of the Woolaston Parish in the 1800s. He lived in an adjacent manor house now called The Old Rectory. Lord William was the seventh of nine sons of Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort and Elizabeth Boscawen, daughter of the Hon. Edward Boscawen. He also had four sisters.

Measuring: Frame width 5 3/8 inch (13.5 cm) by height 6 ¼ inch (16 cm). Aperture width 3 1/8 inch (8 cm) by height 3 5/8 inch (9.5 cm).

Condition: Light surface wear and a few small chips to the edges of the frame, all commensurate with age.
