18th Century French Textile Fragment Master Masonic Embroidery Compass C 1799

This is a delicious framed antique textile for the interior designer, or for decoration in your vintage study, or library. One of a pair, each sold individually - this metallic embroidery on silk was produced in France during the late 18th / early 19th century. The embroidery is a fragment of a Master Masons masonic sash which was worn for ceremonies at the masonic lodge. The sash features the square and compasses which is the single most identifiable symbol of Freemasonry. Below the Square and Compasses we find the letter ‘M. The textile pieces features extensive wove metal thread decoration, including gold spangles. A gilt metal thread braiding surrounds the entire piece.

The fragment has been salvaged from a larger sash, reduced in size and framed behind glass in an absolutely stunning, very Gothic looking 19th century deep set frame with the most wonderful, moulded gesso detailing. The backing paper is very old and looks to be unopened since it was framed.

This would make the perfect conversation piece for your home.

Measuring: Frame width 6 inch (15 cm) by height 5 ¾ inch (14.5 cm). Aperture width approximately 4 inch (10.5 cm) by height 3 ¾ inch (10 cm).

Condition: Some areas of loss to moulded detailing of the black frame. Minor loss to silk along the top edge, remember that this is a fragment.
