18th Century Miniature Stipple Engraving Flower Girls C 1800

If you love to adorn your curated interior with luxury antique miniature frames then this example needs to live with you.

This rare and decorative miniature stipple engraving originates from England around the 1800 to 1810 period. The hand-coloured stipple engraving features a mother and her child in a rural setting; the mother is carrying a basket full of flowers. Flower sellers were a popular subject in the late 18th and early 19th century, think George Morland, William Hamilton, Francis Wheatley.

The engraving is housed behind its original convex glass in its original frame. This is a most decorative and top quality miniature frame. The has a lacquered papier mache front with gilt metal inner and outer edge. The back of the frame features the original framer's label reading:

‘Jones. Looking Glafs & picture frame manufacturers. Print Sellers, High Street, Oxford.’ It is extremely uncommon to find a piece of this age that is complete with its original framer’s label. Notice how the ‘s’ in ‘glass’ has been spelt with an ‘f,’ such an early piece.

The framer’s label is for Mrs Jones, print seller of High Street, Oxford, England. Mrs Ann Jones carried on the family business after her husband, William David Jones (b 1758 – d 1802), passed away in 1802. William is buried at The University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford.

Measuring: Frame width 3 5/8 inch (9.5 cm) by height 4 ¼ inch (11 cm). Aperture width 1 5/8 inch (4.5 cm) by height 2 1/8 inch (5.5 cm).

Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age. A few minor scratches to original glass.
