Item Description

A rare little discovery for all our 1700s costume and purse collectors. This small 18th century blue silk pocket case would have safely stored bank notes, letters, bills and receipts back in the 1780-1800 period. Of single envelope design with a blue silk ground profusely embroidered in chain stitch with meandering flowers and flowers growing on a little hillock. Open the flap to discover the gorgeous interior, again embroidered in chain stitch, this time we see two love birds and the French saying 'PUISSIONS NOUS LES IMITER' - 'May we Imitate them'.

Original shaded pink braiding to the outer edges. Original striped silk interior.

Size: Closed 3 inch by 5 inch (8 cm by 12 cm)

Condition: Good, strong and original being free from holes, tears or repairs. This purse is 235 years old, it will not be pristine. Minor age darkening to the silk front where natural oils from fingers have pressed to open, over the centuries. As seen in our images, the striped silk lining is very perished to expose the original woven mesh lining support..
