18th Century Silkwork Printwork Embroidery River Scene English C 1790

An ancient antique needlework that dates from the 1780-1790 period. This King George III period silkwork embroidery is English in origin. We see a rural river scene with farm and giant haystacks in the background. A horse and cart travel along the lane while two men in a rowing boat cross the river. From a distance you would think this to be an engraving but actually it is an embroidery on silk ground. Worked in neat monochrome grays, black and brown threads, this was a fashionable technique for embroidered pictures at this time.

Housed behind glass in its original gilt frame.

Size: Frame 12 inch by 14 inch (30.5 cm by 35.5 cm). Oval aperture 8 1/4 inch by 10 inch (21 cm by 26 cm)

Condition: It looks great on the wall, but on inspection it is showing its vast age, if you are looking for a tidy Georgian silkwork, respectfully this is not the item for you. The silk ground has a large crescent shaped split to the central sky area. The silk floss threads to the river have moved/loosened with time. The frame - the four decorative roundels in each corner are naive/amateur replacements. A stable vertical crack to the gilt wood mount top left. All clearly and accurately photographed.
