19th Century A R Burt Portrait Miniature of a Regency Lady Dated 1812 Jane Austen Period

We really do admire the works of Albin Roberts Burt, he is one of our favorite early 19th century miniature artists. This portrait of a lady is no exception as the attention to detail is outstanding.

This wonderful Regency era portrait miniature was painted by the artist Albin Roberts Burt (b 1783 – d 1842) in Worcester, 1812. The watercolour portrait is on card and features a female sitter facing left. The sitter is wearing a day cap called a 'coronet' with curls poking out from beneath her forehead and temples. She also has the chin ties of her day cap left fashionably loose. She wears a square necked silk dress with probable 'tucker' or strip of lace shading her modesty on this low neck line dress. She is wearing her very best pearl necklace with matching earrings for Mr Burt's portrait sitting. The painting is signed by the artist in pencil bottom left.

The painting is housed behind convex glass in an early 19th century papier mache frame. The painting was purchased as one of a pair, each sold individually, each in the same hand and having strong family resemblance, mother and daughter ...see last image. The painting is also signed verso reading ‘Painted by A. R. Burt, Worcester, October 1812.

Albin Roberts Burt (b 1783 – d 1842) was an experienced miniature portrait painter and engraver; due to his family connections he predominantly painted wealthy or society sitters. Albin’s brother, Henry Frederick Burt (b 1782 – d 1807), was secretary to the British Naval hero Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson and his mother, Mary Burt was a friend of Lord Nelson's mistress Emma Hamilton. Albin named one of his daughters, Emma Hamilton Burt (b 1812 – d 1912) after Emma Hamilton (b 1765 – d 1815). Albin named one of his sons, Nelson Burt (b 1813 – d 1822), after Lord Horatio Nelson (b 1758 – d 1805).

Albin Roberts Burt arrived in Worcester, England in August 1812 and set up his studio at No. 79, High Street, Worcester (opposite Barr and Flight’s porcelain works).

This is a delightful portrait miniature by one of the best artists of the day. The artist has a fascinating history; we cannot help but wonder who this lady was. This is the perfect portrait for anyone with a passion for all things Regency, or who collects fine quality miniatures from this early date.

Measuring: Frame width 4 1/4 inch (11 cm) by height 5 inch (13 cm). Aperture width 2 1/4 inch (6 cm) by height 2 3/4 inch (7 cm).

Condition: The portrait is in super condition but please be aware that the frame is a little tired. A few little nibbles to right edge of frame. Old discoloring to the papier mache frame seen at certain angles probably from old damp English interiors, or laid up in an attic space for a long time.
