Item Description

A superb late Georgian embossed paper pheasant picture with hand painted watercolour detailing. There is such skill in being able to realistically depicts this life like version of a Pheasant. This glorious depiction is housed in an equally glorious Gilt Gesso period correct frame.

This beautiful embossed paper pheasant was produced plain in the 1820-30 period by Dobbs of London who were a firm of embossers, print publishers and 'ornamental stationers to the King'. The technique of embossing had just been introduced in the Regency period and it was a very popular form of decoration. Dobbs were known for their use of embossed paper/card designs used in face screens, mourning cards, writing papers, visiting cards & envelopes, adapted to all the purposes of fashionable correspondence; drawing, writing, and wrapping papers etc. Please see the DOBBS embossed name bottom left.

Painting and drawing were very popular pastimes in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The plain high relief/ embossed card was purchased from a stationer and the artist then set to work bringing the pheasant to life by the use of watercolour. Didn't they do a superb job!

Measuring: Frame width 8 ½ inch (21.5 cm) by height 7 1/8 inch (18 cm). Aperture width 6 ½ inch (16.5 cm) by height 5 1/8 inch (13.5 cm).

Condition: Age related toning to paper, light surface wear to frame with the occasional little chip to Gesso surface.
