19th Century English Folk Art Oil Painting The Cowherds Inn Southampton C 1880
Item Description
We are delighted to offer this very appealing little English folk art painting on wooden board.
This charming Victorian oil on board was painted in England around the 1880 period. The landscape painting features a pub next to a village green, which has been identified as The Cowherds Inn at Southampton. Situated on the main road north of Southampton on a common, The Cowherd's Inn was erected in 1762, on the site of an earlier building. This pub is still in existence to this day.
This is fantastic example of English folk art. A totally original painting that is perfect for anyone who loves the country house look! The painting is signed by the artist bottom left reading ‘F. Effeny.’
The painting is by Fred Effeny (b abt. 1868 – d 1933) who was born in Nursling, Hampshire, England. In 1891 his occupation in the census was listed as ‘painter.’ Effeny is not a common surname!
