Item Description

If like us you have a weakness for genuine 19th century folk art portraits then this has to be a contender for your next acquisition.

This charming watercolour portrait was painted in England in the year 1843. The early Victorian era painting features a young child holding a riding crop wearing a dress with a tartan sash. During the first half of the 19th century both young girls and young boys wore dresses (boys wore them up until around the age of 6 when they were breeched -starting wearing breeches/trousers). The painting is housed behind old glass in its original wood veneered frame.

This is a wonderful example of English folk art. The painting is on paper/card and is housed behind old glass in its original frame. The painting is complete with its original backing paper with the original owners’ inscriptions reading.

‘God, from my youth up, thy terrors have I suffered with a troubled mind.’ – Psalm 88.

‘Enter not into the fields of the fatherless: For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.’ – Proverbs 23.

The painting is signed and dated by the artist in pencil; it is a little hard to read but we can just make out the date for 1843. There is also a hand written verse and additional script to the reverse which is a little difficult to decipher. T

This is a wonderfully original piece of English folk art. Perfect for anyone who loves childhood antiques.
