Item Description

This really is a wonderful little cut paper portrait silhouette as the frame, technique and sitter are a winning combination. This miniature silhouette profile was cut with scissors in England around the 1840 period. The silhouette features a young lady in profile view. She can be seen wearing her best dress, notice how the artist has expertly brough out areas of tone and detail in her dress and hair. This process is known as ‘bronzing’. We love how the artist has painted the ringlets in her hair. The silhouette is housed behind old wavy glass in its original bird’s eye maple veneer frame with its original backing board.

Measuring: Frame width 5 3/8 inch (13.5 cm) by height 6 3/8 inch (16 cm). Aperture width 3 inch (7.5 cm) by height 4 inch (10 cm).

Condition: Lightest of surface wear commensurate with age. Vertical area of age darkening to the paper along the base of the portrait, likely where it has slipped in the frame slightly over the years.
