19th Century Rare Childs Mug Bowling The Hoop Childhood Game English C 1840

We were thrilled to discover for you this rare little children's pottery mug. The rarity is the title 'Bowling The Hoop' rather than the usual 'Rolling The Hoop'.

These transfer printed mugs and plates were originally designed as either educational aids for children, or given as rewards at Sunday School for good behaviour.

We love this little 1840s mug because it encapsulates for us - the freedom of being a child. As well as the sheer fun and social engagement found in playing; educational and psychological researchers' all agree that play is an important tool for early brain development. The problem solving skills that it nurtures are essential tools for humans. The act of free playing opens up the brain to all sorts of possibilities.

Our charming child’s nursery ware mug was made in England during the 19th century, circa 1840. The mug features a hand coloured transfer printed design titled ‘Bowling The Hoop’ and depicts two children having great fun when hoop bowling. Hoop rolling, hoop trundling was a popular child’s game dating back at least to the 1500s. One of the earliest depictions in art is by Pieter Bruegel The Elder with his 1560 painting titled 'Childhood Games' where care free children can be seen hoop bowling along with many other childhood games.

This little mug is a lovely example of English pearlware, notice the decorative fanned handle.

Measuring: Width including handle 3 ½ inch (9 cm) by height 2 ½ inch (6 cm).

Condition: Very good with natural crazing to glaze commensurate with age.
