Item Description

This rare and decorative, very small reverse painted print on glass originates from here in England circa 1800. The reverse print features a portrait of Charles Coote, 1st Earl of Bellomont, KB, PC (Ire), (b 1738 – d 1800) of Cootehill, County Cavan, Ireland. See his ancestral home of Bellamont House finished in 1730, designed in the Palladian style by architect Edward Lovett Pearce.

Charles Coote was an Anglo-Irish politician who served as one of the Postmasters General of Ireland. Having just the one legitimate son who died before him, his titles became extinct at his death. In his personal life he he was known as mad and bad due to his eccentric, flamboyant character. He challenged a gentleman to a duel over a trivial event and was shot in the groin! He was a convulsive womaniser, getting married only to find out that he had privately married before. He had many children from many lovers!!

The print is after a portrait of the Earl painted in 1773 by Joshua Reynolds. The portrait was exhibited in 1774 at the Royal Academy and shows Bellomont depicted wearing the extravagant robes of the Order of the Bath, signifying high status and achievement.

The reverse print is housed in an antique ebonised wood frame. This is the perfect item for anyone who loves history!

Reverse printing on glass was a popular technique from the 1780s onwards. It involved applying engraved on paper images to the back surface of glass, then removing the paper to just leave the imprint of the image. The image was then hand coloured, then finally fixed with many layers of varnish. Reverse prints are ALWAYS dark, the intention being they become illuminated at night by candlelight/gas light....very magical.

Measuring: Frame width 7 ½ inch (19 cm) by height 10 inch (25.5 cm). Aperture width 4 7/8 inch (12.5 cm) by height 7 3/8 inch (19 cm).

Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age. The image is dark, our camera has brightened the close up images allowing you to see the details.
