Item Description

This charming and decorative Mauchline Ware snuff box was produced in Scotland during the 19th century, circa 1850. The snuff box features a humorous transfer printed design to the hinged lid depicting two donkeys facing each other with a fence in-between! The text reads ‘When Shall We Three Meet Again.’

‘When Shall We Three Meet Again’ is the opening line to William Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Macbeth.’ The association with Donkey’s is unknown but can be found on postcards, printed wares during the mid-19th to early 20th century.

The box features its original tinned lining with impressed retailers mark for ‘Adolph Frankau & Co.’ Adolph Frankau & Co was established in 1847 and became a respected importer of tobacco and smoking related items until 1856 when Adolph Frankau died and the company was taken on by 18 year old Louis Blumfield.

Mauchline Ware has always been extremely collectible, particularly pieces featuring animals. Mauchline Ware is the name given to the 19th century tourist wares manufactured usually in Sycamore wood both in the town of Mauchline and its environs of East Ayrshire, Scotland. The snuff boxes in particular were known for the ingenious internal knuckle wood hinges that were hidden from exterior view.

This is the perfect item for anyone who collects Mauchline Ware, Treen, anyone who loves donkey’s, Shakespeare or anyone with a connection to Scotland! Please see our other Mauchline pieces from this same wonderful collection, each sold separately in our store.
