19th Century William Scott Sculpture Plaque William Behnes

Okay, we all can't own an original William Behnes sculpture. But you can own the original very sumptuous Victorian Museum exhibit plaque that accompanied his sculpture of William Scott. How amazingly fascinating for the art lover's wall.

This fabulous and unique exhibit plaque was produced in England during the last half of the 19th century. The plaque would have sat beneath the sculpture exhibit housed in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG). The NPG has since changed the way it displays its objects and these quality 19th century object plaques are no longer used.

The hand painted text reads:
‘William Scott, Baron Stowell, F. R. S. 1745 – 1836. Judge of the High Court of Admiralty. Sculptured in 1824 by William Behnes. Purchased, April 1861 (125). ’

William Behnes (b 1795 – d 1864) was a celebrated British sculptor. His works can be found in important locations such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and Trafalgar Square. Despite his skill and craftsmanship Behnes died with not a penny to his name.

We love the sign writer’s text, such a skill! The text is hand painted on substantial gilt metal and is housed behind glass in its original equally substantial gilt metal frame.

Measuring: Frame width 9 ½ inch (24 cm) by height 4 ½ inch (11.5 cm). Aperture width 7 3/8 inch (19 cm) by height 3 5/8 inch (9.5 cm).

Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age.
