Antique A R Burt Portrait Miniature Wealthy Lady by Chester 1821
Item Description
This wonderful Georgian portrait miniature was painted in the year 1821. The painting features a portrait of a lady in all of her finery. She has such a warm and kind face, and her hairstyle is to die for. She is housed behind convex glass in the original papier mache frame complete with its original artists pressed brass hanger. The impressed text to the hanger reads ‘A. R. Burt, Miniature Painter.’
The painting is signed by the artist in pencil bottom right and verso with text reading ‘Drawn by A. R. Burt, Chester, Dec 1821.’
Albin Roberts Burt (b 1783 – d 1842) was an experienced miniature portrait painter and engraver; due to his family connections he predominantly painted wealthy or society sitters. Albin’s brother, Henry Frederick Burt (b 1782 – d 1807), was secretary to the British Naval hero Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson and his mother, Mary Burt was a friend of Lord Nelson's mistress Emma Hamilton. Albin named one of his daughters, Emma Hamilton Burt (b 1812 – d 1912) after Emma Hamilton (b 1765 – d 1815). Albin named one of his sons, Nelson Burt (b 1813 – d 1822), after Lord Horatio Nelson (b 1758 – d 1805).
This would have been an expensive portrait to commission and the sitter would have been a wealthy lady. Albin Roberts Burt almost exclusively painted those in high society. If only we knew the name of the sitter. This is the perfect item for anyone who loves Georgian era art and antiques.
