Antique Children's Cat Plate Kitten My Brother from Mary Belson Poem C 1812 Georgian

This is an extremely rare and sought after plate. This wonderful Regency era child’s nursery plate was made in England around the 1812 period. The plate features a transfer printed poem titled ‘My Brother: Poor Kittens Mistake’ reading ‘Who would his favourite kitten bring, And tie paper to a string, Making her run in merry ring, My Brother.’

The plate features a transfer printed scene with a brother and sister playing with their little kitten in a rural setting. The plate has been extensively hand decorated with red and pink floral decoration.

The illustration is from ‘My Brother’ by Mary Belson which was published by William Darton Jnr in London in 1812. Reference: Plate 89 in ‘Gifts for Good Children’ by Noel Riley. Mary Belson (b abt. 1790 – d abt. 1865) was a prolific author; she went by several different surnames during her writing career, including Elliott and predominantly worked with the publisher William Darton Junior.
