Antique Copper Kettle – Duke of Buccleuch Estate, Circa 1870

This HUGE and impressive 14 inches tall copper kettle was produced in Scotland during the 19th century, circa 1870. It would now make a stunning feature in or outside of a tea shop, coffee shop, restaurant or on display in a large period kitchen.

The exterior features a highly unusual engraved coronet over the letter ‘B’. This particular coronet is the coronet of a Duke, the use of coronets was only permitted for members of the Royal Family or Peers. The kettle belonged to Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch, 7th Duke of Queensbury (b 25th November 1806 – d 16th April 1884).

The Buccleuch family are an important Scottish family; interestingly they are biggest private landowner in the United Kingdom. This large kettle would have been kept next to a fireplace in the large country kitchen belonging to one of the Duke’s large estates. The kettle has the most fantastic glow and most fabulous natural patina; it was clearly a much used and valued item.

Measuring: Width 15.75 inch (40 cm) by height 13 7/8 inch (35 cm). Depth 11 inch (28 cm). Weight is a HEAVY 7.12 lbs or 3.23 KG

Condition: This antique kettle is structurally sound, but now purely for decoration, it would not be watertight due to seeing daylight through a thin area of the base rim. The kettle has some very old soldered repairs around the spout and to the lid knop and also general wear surface dents as seen in our many images.
