Antique Corringham Church Painting Essex England Samuel Mitchell Kershaw C 1810

This wonderful, original, monochrome watercolor was painted in England circa 1810. One of a pair, each sold individually. The perfect painting for those of you who love England and its quaint churches.

The monochrome watercolour on paper features St Mary the Virgin Church which is a small parish church in the town of Corringham, Essex, England with a history dating back to the 7th century! The church was attacked by the Vikings and much later by the Germans during the Second World War.

The painting is signed by the artist bottom right reading ‘S. Kershaw.’ The painting is one of a pair, each sold separately. This painting is unopened since it was painted; we have opened the other painting as the paper had slipped in the frame during transit. The partner painting was signed verso ‘Drawn by Samuel Kershaw aet 14 (about age 14).’

The painting is by a young Samuel Mitchell Kershaw (b abt. 1796 – d 1854) and was passed down by decent of the Kershaw/Dickie family. The Kershaw’s and Dickie’s were very wealthy families. Samuel Mitchell Kershaw who was the son of Edmund Kershaw (b abt. 1754) and Mary Dickie (b abt. 1754 – d 1819). Edmund Kershaw married Mary Dickie at St Katharine Creechurch, London in 1775. Mary died in 1819 and is buried at St Mary, Islington.

Samuel Mitchell Kershaw lived at Glebe Place, Stoke Newington. Samuel married Harriot Parquot (b abt. 1804 - d 1880) in 1823 at St Mary, Stoke Newington. Samuel Mitchell Kershaw worked at East India House which was the London headquarters of the East India Company, from which much of British India was governed until the British government took control of the Company's possessions in India in 1858.

Samuel Mitchell Kershaw was the nephew of:
Andrew Dickie, esq (b abt. 1755 – d 1834). Confidential clerk and partner of Thomas Coutts & Co Bank (now NatWest group) and envoy to its royal clients. Died at Clapham Rise, London.

The painting is on paper and is housed behind old glass in its original birds eye maple frame. The painting is complete with its original backing paper and is unopened. Remarkable! This is a wonderful painting with a fascinating history, passed down by the family over 150+ years. We have provided just a snapshot of the family history.

Measuring: Frame width 7 ¼ inch (18.5 cm) by height 5 ¾ inch (14.5 cm). Aperture width 4 ¼ inch (11 cm) by height 2 7/8 inch (7.5 cm).

Condition: Good with minor wear to frame and a chip to inner gilt slip top corner commensurate with its 200 plus years of age.
