Antique Godfrey Kneller Portrait Plaque Charles Sackville Exhibit

Okay, so we can't all stretch to purchase an original Sir Godfrey Kneller portrait but here you can own the exhibit plaque that sat alongside one of his portraits! This fabulous and unique museum portrait plaque was produced in England during the 19th century. This is the original plaque that would have sat beneath the portrait of Charles Sackville that is housed in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), London, England. The NPG has since refurbished its portrait galleries and paintings no longer have these top quality wonderful 19th century plaques beneath them.

The hand painted text reads:
‘Charles Sackville, Sixth Earl of Dorset, K. G. 1638 – 1706. Poet and patron of men of letters. Served under the Duke of York against the Dutch. Painted in the Studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller. Purchased, November 1867. (250).’

We love the sign writer’s text, such a skill! The text is hand painted on gilt metal and is housed behind glass in its original gilt metal frame. This object is heavy and sooooo well made. We love it and guarantee that you will too.

Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt (b 1646 – d 1723) was the leading portraitist in England during the 17th and early 18th century. He painted monarchs, leading scientists and members of the ruling classes. The corresponding oil painting is still housed in the National Portrait Gallery.
