Item Description

We were thrilled to discover this rather scarce and unusual antique wax desk top seal. This is a desk seal with brass base matrix for pressing in red melted wax to seal letters and correspondence. This seal was made from a natural Victorian pressed cow horn (Bovine) material featuring inset mother-of-pearl tabs. The bust depicts the Reverend John Wesley (1703–1791), the founder of Methodism, dressed in traditional clerical attire. It was made here in England around 1839 to mark the centenary of the Methodist movement.

If you are a collector of Wesleyana, desk seals or the looking for an interesting curio for your cabinet this will be the perfect addition to your collection.

Size: 3 1/4 inch (8cm). Matrix diameter 3/4 inch (2 cm)

Condition: All original with a fabulous patina. As seen and as is common, his extremities have wear - in particular his nose. General drying/ageing to the natural material.

Item Id: 16675
