Antique Mason's “BANDANA” Foo Dog Pattern IRONSTONE Coffee Cup and Saucer 1860

This is a superb opportunity to own an extremely scarce Masons Ironstone coffee cup and saucer in one of the most sought-after patterns. The matching cup and saucer were made in England during the mid 19th century, circa 1860. A fabulous interior design statement on your shelf.

This is an extremely rare shape; there are very few known examples of this Mason’s ‘teardrop’ shape. This wonderful oriental pattern is called ‘Bandana’ and is one of the most sought-after patterns produced by Mason’s. The black and white transfer printed pattern features stylised Foo dogs or Shishi/ Chinese Guardian Lions with over painted red detailing.

The tear drop shape is a tribute to the tear drop shape custard cups of the 1700s. See a Wedgwood Jasperware teardrop shape custard cup held at The V & A Museum and The Cleveland Museum of Art.

Foo Dogs also called Foo Lions or Guardian Dogs date back to ancient times in Asia. Their presence outside one's home was said to ward off evil spirits and protect the inhabitants, symbolizing protection, loyalty, and prosperity

The cup and saucer both feature the transfer printed manufactures marks reading ‘Mason’s Patent Ironstone China’ above a printed crown with hand painted pattern marks below reading ‘b9440’.

This is a decorative pair, the ideal designer piece. Produced in very small numbers!

Measuring: Width including handle 2 7/8 inch (7.5 cm) by height 2 inch (5 cm). Saucer diameter 4 ¾ inch (12 cm).

Condition: Lightest of surface wear commensurate with age.
