Item Description

We do love genuine English prattware and we do love items connected to Great Britain's sea fairing past. This gorgeous little item ticks both boxes.

This decorative pratt ware jug was made in England during the late 1700s, circa 1790. The jug features a depiction of the popular maritime scene titled ‘The Sailor’s Farewell’ and ‘The Sailor’s Return.’

‘The Sailor’s Farewell’ features the sailor leaving his wife, we see him running to a small boat on the shoreline. ‘The Sailor’s Return’ features the same sailor returning to his worried wife, a large sailing ship can be seen on the horizon. This pitcher was made when most families had a relative at sea. This was a period in history when Great Britain, North America, Spain and France were involved in naval warfare. Being aboard ship was a dangerous occupation, if disease or your enemy didnt kill you, falling overboard might (most people did not swim in the 1700s)!

The jug is one of the smaller examples we have seen. We love the earthy pratt glazes in tones of, orange, blue, green and brown. This is the perfect item for anyone who loves early English ceramics, perfect for anyone with a connection to the sea.
