19th Century Childs Nursery Ware Plate Bear Blue And White Transfer Ware Aesop’s Fables C 1870
Item Description
A blue and white child’s nursery ware plate that features a bear! How unusual!
This delightful child’s nursery ware plate was produced in England during the 19th century, circa 1865. The plate features a blue and white transfer printed design titled ‘Aesop’s Fables. The Travellers And The Bear’ and features two travellers, one of which is playing dead (see details below). The other is seen climbing a tree in the hope of evading the jaws of the bear. The plate also features a fantastic alphabet design. This really is such an unusual piece.
There are few examples of bears featured in transferware, and this is one of the best pieces we have handled. The blue and white, the bear, the quality of the transfer print. So crisp!
Aesop's Fables, or the Aesopica, is a collection of fables credited to Aesop, a slave and storyteller who lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 564 BCE. The Bear and the Travelers is a fable attributed to Aesop and is number 65 in the Perry Index.
The basic story is of two friends walking through rough country who are suddenly confronted by a bear. One of the travellers saves himself by scrambling up a tree while the other throws himself on the ground and pretends to be dead. The animal comes close and sniffs him over but then leaves, for bears are reputed not to touch dead meat. Then the man in the tree came down to his comrade and jokingly asked what the bear had been saying to him. ‘It was some good advice,’ said his friend; ‘he told me never to trust someone who deserts you in need.’
This is the perfect item for anyone with a passion for history, blue and white, anyone who loves bears! They are hard to find in 19th century art and antiques.
