Georgian Childrens Beadwork Cap Knitted Beaded Infants Bonnet Circa 1830
Item Description
A super find for your period costume collection, or special larger doll. This little babies cap is very fancily and finely knitted with turquoise glass bead decoration. This small christening cap originated circa 1820 to 1840. The cotton knit is so very fine and the blue beaded petal crown so very pretty. The bonnet has a turquoise bead border in a running dart or arrow design. There is also a pretty picot border with original cotton tape under chin ties.
Please see identical examples held at major world museums, the MFA and The Met. This is one of a small single owner collection of early knitted bonnets both beaded and plain.
Size: Small, not new born, we would estimate for a 1 year old infant back then. When laid flat front to back 4 3/4 inch, chin to top 5 1/4 inch
All images taken in natural English daylight.
Condition: Very good, clean and bright with one old darned repair to the crown seen at the side of a petal at 7 o'clock.
