Item Description

We are excited to be able to offer this absolutely stunning miniature 18th century enamel on copper portrait silhouette. This is THE perfect size and is ready to display in your very special Georgian doll's house.

The silhouette was produced in the last quarter of the 18th century, 1770 to 1780. This is one from a set of four which depict two generations from the same family, each sold individually. This is one of our favourite items as we love the costume details: the swept back from the forehead egg shaped hair with likely pad inserted of horsehair, also her pretty ribbon tied necklace with bow to the back ! These fine enamels on copper are just so unusual.

The side silhouette profile is surrounded by a rich cream ground, set within a raised gilt cartouche. The cartouche surrounded by the most detailed floral spray, just look at the pretty pink Roses and teeny Viola. The attention to detail is astonishing. The quality of the painting is certainly on par with the floral paintings found on the best pieces of European porcelain produced during this period. Please see the works of Wilhelm Ackermann (German, 1764–1834) at The Met Museum for similar styles of silhouettes.

The portrait is mounted in its own matching and very high quality gilt ormolu Laurel leaf, berry and bow frame which is of the period.

Size: Framed 2 7/8 inch tall by 2 inch wide. Actual enamel oval 1 3/4 inch tall by 1 1/2 inch wide.

Condition: Georgian enamels are delicate little objects of virtue and by their nature will more often than not usually shows signs of age, minor damage to the fragile enamel. Sadly damage to enamel at 8 and 11 o'clock to expose the copper. Two faint Y hairlines in the actual enamel too difficult to pick up on camera. 3 out of four back retaining pins missing, we have taped her in to secure.
