18th Century Needlework Canvas Work Picture Peacock Fruits English C 1740 AF
Item Description
This incredible tent stitch embroidery was wrought here in England during the 1720-1760 period. The worsted wool stitching in both gros and petit point was wrought upon a canvas ground. This type of needlework was in vogue during the first half of the 18th century, when designs were transitioning from the wool crewelwork's of the previous century. We wonder if this and its female peahen partner (sold individually) were once part of the same firescreen/pole screen - see similar examples at The Met Museum Object Number: 64.101.1153 and Winterthur Museum 1957.0747.001 A, B.
We see a large peacock bird, facing right, stood upon a cornucopia (horn of plenty) nestled among large, stylized leaves and fruits. Around the edge of the needlework is an original, of the period, very decorative woven braiding. This gorgeous and ancient needlework is housed behind glass in a decorative very early 19th century gilt frame with rope work style banding. The embroidery is one of a pair, each sold separately (the frame on this example is marginally wider than the other). To the reverse the back panel is covered in 18th century crimson velvet.
This is the perfect framed textile piece for anyone who is looking for a unique interior design piece for their home.
Measuring: Frame width 15 inch (38 cm) by height 12 inch (30.5 cm). Aperture width 13 ¼ inch (33.5 cm) by height 10 ½ inch (26 cm).
Condition: A few minor areas of wear and the fabric has faded over its vast life time. A very old burn from a hot cinder or candle to the base of Peacock's chest. Light surface wear to frame commensurate with age. The occasional gilt touch up to frame.
