Victorian Newfoundland Dog Plate Pink Splash Lustre C 1850 RARE
Item Description
This rare and decorative transferware plate was produced in England during the 19th century, circa 1850. The plate features a monochrome transfer printed design of children playing in the grounds of a country house with their trusty Newfoundland / St Bernard type dog. This was a popular scene during the early Victorian era, please see our montage image (each sold separately in our store).
What makes this plate so unusual is the pink splash lustre border, this is really quite uncommon! We tend to associate lustre pieces with the North East of England, Sunderland lustre wares, but they were also produced in smaller numbers in Staffordshire England. Our example features a transfer printed manufactures mark to the rear reading ‘Rural Sports, B & B.’ We cannot currently find another example making this a scarce piece!
This is a stunning plate with presence, a rare item that is perfect for anyone who loves dogs!
Measuring: Diameter 8 ¼ inch (21 cm).
Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age. ‘y’ shape small stress mark to glaze to rear of plate, not a hairline.
