RARE 18th Century Engraving The Bargain Rural Lovers George Townley Stubbs 1798

We love to bring you the more scarce antiques, those that you will not find easily. This charming little sepia stipple engraving is no exception as you will struggle to find another, we currently haven't been able to. It was printed in England during the 18th century in the year 1798. The stipple and line engraving is titled ‘The Bargain’ and features two lovers in a rural setting.

The poem below reads ‘Behind the bush, before the bush, behind the bush in the garden. And all the money she could get, has four pence halfpenny farthing.’

The print is complete with publishers details reading ‘Published May 25th 1798, as the Act Directs. Engraved by George Townley Stubbs, No 30, Henrietta, Street, Covent Garden, London.’

George Townley Stubbs (b 1748 – d 1802) was an engraver and print seller. He was the son of the celebrated artist George Stubbs ARA (b 1724 – d 1806) the English painter, best known for his paintings of horses.

The print is housed behind glass in wonderful mid-19th century frame with gilded gesso bead detailing. As previously stated, this is a rare item we have not been able to find another example. The perfect item for anyone who loves all things 18th century.

Measuring: Frame width 8 5/8 inch (22 cm) by height 7 7/8 inch (20 cm). Aperture width 6 ½ inch (16.5 cm) by height 5 ¾ inch (14.5 cm).

Condition: The engraving in good order, the frame less so. A few sections of bead gesso is missing to each of the four sides. A minor area of discolouration to paper near ladies head.
