Rare 19th Century 1830 William III Nursery Plate Historical Pottery
Item Description
This rare pottery child’s nursery ware plate was produced in England during the 19th century, circa 1830. This is a highly sought after example and features a sepia transfer print design depicting William III - William of Orange, on horseback. This is most famously depicted in the historic statue equestrian statue of William III on display in the centre of Queen Square in Bristol, England. The plate features the text reading ‘No Surrender 1690’ referencing William III’s victory over King James VII and II of Scotland, England and Ireland at the famous Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The rally cry of 'No Surrender' directed at King James by William and his army when King James advanced and offered terms.
William III (born 4 November 1650 – died 8 March 1702), he was grandson of Charles I of England . William was widely known as William of Orange, as he was sovereign Prince of Orange, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from 1672. William and his wife Mary ruled England, Scotland and Ireland as joint sovereigns from 1689 until William's death in 1702.
This is a highly sought after historical and political piece that will display excellently as part of any discerning collection.
