19th Century Portrait Plaque Lord Nelson Battle Of Trafalgar Naval History 1805

This is a rare opportunity to own this fantastic early 19^th century Nelson commemorative piece! The central pressed brass plaque features one of England’s most famous historical figures, Vice-Admiral of the White Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson (b 1758 –d 1805) who was a British Royal Navy officer whose leadership, grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics led to multiple decisive British naval victories during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest admirals in history.

The plaque is housed behind its original convex glass in its original papier mache frame. The square frame is complete with its original top hanger featuring an anchor below the crown. This is a highly unusual style of top hanger. Lord Nelson was killed in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. He was a hugely popular figure, and commemorative pieces were produced to celebrate his life. The plaque is made from pressed brass and is after Peter Wyon. Lewis Pingo also produced plaques and snuff boxes in pressed brass as did several other makers.

Measuring: Frame width 4 3/8 inch (11 cm) by height 4 ¾ inch (12 cm). Aperture width 2 1/8 inch (5.5 cm).

Condition: A few minor nibbles to the edges of the frame. General ageing to surface of papier mache frame.
