RARE 19th Century Regency Portrait Painting Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales

This is a wonderful opportunity to own a stunning, large, Royal portrait. The portrait is after Alfred Edward Chalon RA (b 1780 – d 1860) who was a Swiss high society portraitist. The portrait was likely painted after the Henry Meyer stipple engraving of 1818, and published by Rudolph Ackermann.

The watercolour portrait features Princess Charlotte of Wales (b 1796 – d 1817) who was the only child of George, Prince of Wales (Prince Regent, then later King George IV), and his wife, Caroline of Brunswick. If she had outlived both her grandfather King George III and her father, she would have become Queen of the United Kingdom; but tragically she died prior to both of them at the tender age of 21 after childbirth. At the time of her death the whole country went into deep mourning; so much so that linen-drapers ran out of black cloth. Allegedly even the poor and homeless tied armbands of black on their clothes in respect. Reference: For Charlotte: NPG D33514 in the National Portrait Gallery online collection.

The portrait is housed behind old glass in its original gilt frame. The frame is absolutely stunning! The portrait is also complete with its original wood backing board with original ink title inscription.

Measuring: The substantial frame width 12.5 inch (31.5 cm) by height 16 1/8 inch (41 cm). Aperture width 9 3/8 inch (24 cm) by height 13.25 inch (33.5 cm).

Condition: Aged darkening to the paper. Light surface wear to Gesso frame commensurate with age.
