Item Description

We are pleased to share with you this wonderfully decorative 19th century ex libris book plate.

The book plate features a Latin motto below the Minton family heraldic crest reading ‘Pro Deo Et Patria’ which translates to ‘For God And Country.’

The book plate belonged to the Reverend Samuel Minton (b abt. 1820 – d 1894). Samuel Minton was the first reverend of the Church of St Thomas the Apostle, Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent. The Church was built to the design of the English Gothic revival architect Sir Gilbert Scott and was built by the Minton family. The church is decorated with unique Minton tiles. The Reverend Samuel Minton was the grandson of the founder of Mintons, Thomas Minton (b 1765 –d 1836).

The Rev. Samuel Minton (b abt. 1820 – d 1894) was the son of The Reverend Thomas Webb Minton (b 1791 – d 1870), Rector of Darlington, and Jane Minton, née Hoskins (b 1780 – d 1854).

The Rev. Samuel Milton married Cecil Mary Minton, née Rosser (b 1820 – d 1895) in 1843. Cecil was the daughter of the solicitor and antiquary William Henry Rosser (b abt. 1792 – d 1848). Rev. Samuel Minton had many children.

The heraldic crest features a combination of the Minton, Hoskins and Rosser family crests.
