Item Description

This rare and decorative Mauchline Ware snuff box was produced in Scotland during the 19th century, circa 1850. The snuff box features a humorous transfer printed design to the hinged lid depicting a monkey playing with a dog! The text reads ‘Don't you wish you may get it.’
A variation of the scene is titled ‘Close Calculation, Don't you wish you may get it’ which was printed by Elijah Chapman Kellogg in the United States during the early 1850s. The scene can also occasionally be found in Staffordshire figures form and Berlin wool works from the same period. The common detail in all depictions being the monkey, dog and kennel!

Mauchline Ware has always been extremely collectible, particularly pieces featuring animals. Mauchline Ware is the name given to the 19th century wooden printed tourist wares manufactured in the town of Mauchline, East Ayrshire, Scotland.
