Rare Georgian Wax Seal Impression 1811 Admiralty Office Deal Kent British Naval History
Item Description
This is a fascinating and rare item from Britain’s naval past! This wax seal impression stamped by the Admiralty Office and dates to 1811. 1811 was an important year with George, Prince of Wales becoming Prince Regent, because of the perceived insanity of his father, King George III of the United Kingdom.
The Admiralty was the British government department responsible for the command of the Royal Navy until 1964, historically under its titular head, the Lord High Admiral – one of the Great Officers of State.
The office of Lord High Admiral, when it was not occupied by an individual, was put into commission which was overseen by a board of Lords Commissioners headed by a "First Lord of the Admiralty". Charles Philip Yorke PC FRS FSA (b 1764 – b 1834) was a Member of Parliament, Secretary at War and First Lord of the Admiralty from 1810 to 1812.
The wax seal features a central anchor; the text surrounding it reads ‘Sigil Admirals Office Deal 1811.’ Deal is a town in Kent, England, which lies where the North Sea and the English Channel meet. The Admiralty office was located in Deal during the early 19th century.
This is an extremely rare item, we have not been able to find another example. This is the perfect conversation piece for anyone who loves history or has a connection to the coast or navy.
Measuring: Total width 1 3/8 inch (3.5 cm) by height 1 3/8 inch (3.5 cm).
Condition: The wax has age related drying cracks. A slightly loose section at 3 o'clock shown in images.
