RARE Whitewood Early Tunbridge Ware Box Bank Of England London Financial District C 1830

This wonderful whitewood box was produced in England circa 1830. This box is a rare and sought after example of early Tunbridge ware. The box features a transfer printed design to the lid with the scene titled ‘Bank of England From St. Bartholomew Lane’ after a drawing by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (b 1793– d 1864) who was a British topographical watercolour artist well known for his architectural paintings.

The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom and the model on which most modern central banks have been based. It was established in 1694, nationalised in 1946 and gained independence in 1998. The Bank of England moved to its current location in Threadneedle Street in 1734. It was expanded throughout the 18th and early 19th century.

The box opens to reveal the inner storage compartment complete with its original Georgian pink paper lining, though missing its dividers. Previous owners inscription to base.

Measuring: 7 7/8 inch (20.5 cm) by height 1 7/8 inch (5 cm). Depth 5 inch (13 cm).

Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age. Minor age related staining to paper lining. A small repair to the top right corner of lid where the pin hinge broke through the surface. A couple of small treated woodworm holes.
