Rarest Georgian Shoe Childs Toy Rattle Talisman Initials LV Circa 1830

This ancient single shoe object has us baffled, perhaps a cordwainer has the answer for us? We really do know our shoes and boots having sold many antique 18th and early 19th century pairs over the past 20 years. We have also sold 19th century wooden shoes lasts, clogs, apprentice samples and early pattens - but this single item does not entirely fit any of those categories.

What we do know..... this is an English substantial cow hide leather form of a shoe that is very well made and which dates from the 1830 period. The square toe and construction all absolutely spot on for the 1830s. Having a straight leather sole that continues to the heel slap. The small low heel is stacked with a piece of top leather. Having the rusty remains of nails to the underside toe and heel. Stitching all around the leather rand evident to the sole. Wheeling decoration evident around the heel seal. Interior stiffener to the back quarters. However cannot be made by the usual turnshoe construction as the shoe is solid - no area for foot to be inserted?? To the rear of the heel are two beautifully stitched initials LV.

What we don't know......The other strange discovery of this mystery shoes is the small ancient glazed clay ball that rattles around inside of the shoe. The shoe is damaged - see the 2 holes to the top of one side. These holes allow us to see and carefully remove the little clay ball.

What was the purpose of this object? A test for the apprentice shoemaker? An end of day toy or love token made by the shoemaker? During the 19th century many shoe and bootmakers worked from home, a cottage industry paid by piece work. Perhaps with left over supplies the father made a toy for his child, or a gift for his lover with the initials LV? Or could it be more mysterious, perhaps a talisman to be placed in the chimney or under the floorboards to ward off evil spirits??

A fascinating ancient survivor that fuels the imagination.

Size: 6 3/4 inch (17.5 cm) long by 2 1/2 inch (6.5 cm) tall.

Condition: Ancient and showing its age. The leather is hard and dry. There are two ancient areas of damage. However, all stable.
