19th Century Oil On Board Painting Richmond Bridge River Thames C 1860

For all anglophiles, a delicious original oil painting to remind you of one of the most affluent districts of London, England. This delightful original oil painting originates from England during the mid 19th century, circa 1860. The Victorian painting was painted in oils on board and is housed in its original buttery gilt frame. The painting depicts Richmond Bridge which is a 1700s stone arch bridge that crosses the River Thames at Richmond. In fact it is the oldest bridge that currently crosses the River Thames. Richmond became particularly associated with Queen Elizabeth I (r. 1558–1603), who spent her last days there.

The area is also known for the world famous Kew Gardens and Kew Palace, and the rolling landscape of Richmond Park. The ancient bridge connects the two halves of the present-day London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Currently Richmond is a popular place to live for the famous, Sir David Attenborough, Richard E Grant, Tom Holland and Zendaya too name but a few! 

The stone bridge was designed by James Paine and Kenton Couse and built in 1774. In the painting we see a couple on the river in a small rowing boat and sailing boats on the riverbank. We can even see a mother and her children walking along the path to the side of the river.
