Victorian Money Box Rare Brick Shape English Money Bank C 1870

'Brick' shaped money boxes are extremely rare and are one of the most challenging ceramic items to acquire as so few have survived. Money box were often smashed in order to retrieve the coinage.

This example was manufactured in the North of England, in the town of Stockton-On-Tees around the 1870 period. We are fortunate to have two pieces that were like manufactured by the same factory (see images, each sold separately).

The money boxes were available with transfer printed scenes with some hand enamelling, or predominantly hand enamelled pieces like ours. Some pieces also hand applied moulded detailing.

This pottery money box features extensive hand enamelled floral detailing, a wonderful mix of red, green and blue. The top of the money box features hand painted script reading ‘Margret Joana Tromball, 1870.’ The base of the box features an inscribed manufacturer’s date mark reading ‘1870.’

This really is a unique opportunity to own such a fabulous piece of English pottery. This is a true collectors piece!

Measuring: Width 4 5/8 inch (11.5 cm) by height 2 7/8 inch (7.5 cm). Depth 3 ¾ inch (9.5 cm).

Condition: All four feet have been professionally restored.
